Tom Meyer takes seriously the Bible’s command to hide Scripture in his heart (Psalm 119:11). So seriously, in fact, that he has memorized all or parts of thirty books of the Bible. “I started memorizing books and sections of Scripture ten years ago when I realized there are certain scriptural truths about Bible memorization that stand out openly.”
“The spoken Word is the most powerful weapon in our spiritual arsenal.”
As a member of Wordsower Ministries, Tom travels to churches throughout the United States to demonstrate the power of memorizing Scripture. “The spoken Word of God is the most powerful weapon in our spiritual arsenal,” he says. Tom has been encouraged to see how reciting all twenty-two chapters of Revelation or other books from memory inspires fellow believers to learn God’s Word for themselves.
Tucking the Bible away by memorizing it has also proven invaluable for witnessing on the streets of Israel, where Tom has spent much time in recent years as a student and teacher. When given the opportunity to speak with the president of Israel, Shimon Peres, Tom’s memorization ability took over. “I told him the gospel message from memory and gave him the Brit Hadasha (New Covenant or New Testament).” When we hide God’s Word in our hearts, God can use us in some amazing and unexpected ways!
Pointing to the examples of Jesus’s wilderness temptations and Peter’s Scripture-filled sermon on the day of Pentecost, Tom believes all Christians should and can memorize chapters and even whole books of the Bible. “Once I have come to a passage to memorize, I memorize one verse at a time by writing out the verse in stanza form and speaking it while I write it.”
According to the Bible, “the word of God is living and powerful” (Hebrews 4:12) and “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Memorizing the Bible may not be easy—it is not easy for Tom, either. But he works at it daily. His hope is that Christians would begin to speak that Word from memory with true passion.
