Deaf Belgian twins going blind choose to be euthanized

[Deaf Belgian twins going blind choose to be euthanized by Michael Winter] "Distraught about going blind, 45-year-old deaf twin brothers from Belgium chose to be euthanized because they couldn't bear not to see one another, according to reports from Flanders.

Marc and Eddy Verbessem of Putte died Dec. 14 by lethal injection at Brussels University Hospital. Voluntary euthanasia has been legal in Belgium since September 2002.

The doctor who presided over the euthanasia described the twins as being "very happy."

"It was a relief to see the end of their suffering," David Dufour told Germany's RTL TV network. "They had a cup of coffee in the hall, it went well, and a rich conversation. The separation from their parents and brother was very serene and beautiful. At the last, there was a little wave of their hands, and then they were gone..." Full text:

Response to comment [from a Christian]: [emoticon]

God had a plan for them and they short-circuited that process.

Response to comment [from an atheist]: "Being deaf and blind and confined to an institution for life? Some plan ..."

To your mind (Jn 16:33). God's ways are above our ways (Isa 55:9).

Response to comment [from a Jew]: "I guess God doesn't have a plan for all the children who die from hunger every year...or the babies who die from cancer...the mothers killed in car accidents...the father's killed while working as police officers...the half a million who die each year from malaria...it goes on and on and on..."

Sin changed our world.  Everything was good (Ge 1:31).  Now, it's not (Ge 3:5).

"How do you know he had a plan for these two?"

Jer 29:11

"Maybe that plan for for them to go blind, live in misery and then die?"

Perhaps.

"...They chose to die and that was their right."

Our lives are not our own (Jer 10:23, 1 Co 6:19-20).
