Descartes' Argument for the Mind/Body Distinction
Response to comment [from a Catholic]: [Descartes' Argument for the Mind/Body Distinction]
1. Corporeality has the property of being dubitable.
2. I cannot doubt myself.
3. Assume that I am corporeal.
4. Given 1 and 3, it follows that I can doubt myself.
5. Therefore, I both can doubt myself and cannot doubt myself.
6. The above line is a contradiction, and therefore the original assumption is
false.
7. From 3-6, it is clear that I am not corporeal.
Descartes tried to prove the existence of God. Even the demons believe—and tremble! (Jas 2:19). I wonder if he ever put his trust in the Lord (Jn 3:7).
