Home Defense: Weapons, Loads, Tactics

We are looking into his and her shotguns w/ pistol grip.

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "My preference is to have a shoulder stock on my shotguns...I know the pistol grip looks cool and all, but I have this thing about aiming."

In the middle of the night, who aims? Hip fire, boom! Back up, boom!

Saw this at the pawn shop today: Browning .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle, grade III Lk 22:36

"Ya mean you're supposed to aim."

You're going to get the bad guy with a shotgun.

What do you think that metal is? Stainless steel? Pewter? It's signed, too.

Response to comment [from a pagan]: "...Choose wisely and train often..."

How often do you train, pagan?

[How often do you train?] "I must admit that I have slowed down some over the last 64 years, but I can still make it to the range weekly."

That's good.

"[P]agan?"

Isn't that what you call yourself?

"Care to give some reason as to why a persons religion or heritage has anything to do with home defense?"

I suppose pagans can point and shoot, though you do seem to have trouble with the concept of a shotgun being your best choice for home defense. Even the world's best snipers say this.

Sniper Saving Private Ryan

[(Pagan) "Isn't that what you call yourself?" :Plain:] "No, that's what you called me..."

What does that word under "Rep Power" in your profile mean to you?

"I didn't notice a link to this "world's best sniper" saying this?"

Stick with your fancy, dancy semi-auto.

"[Y]ou would have gathered that as I said, shotguns are great for some situations but not all?"

A shotgun under your bed may come in handy one day.

"And that my personal preference would be an AR and the 45 cal ACP."

Neeto. We have some ARs and they are in our gun room in a gun safe. If Akmed and the dirty yak gang (Ge 16:12) are attempting to take our block, I agree. Get the ARs. Meanwhile, a shotgun in the master bedroom is the best choice for home defense. Ask this poor lady

"Would still like an answer for my question!  What does one[']s religion or heritage have to do with home defense?"

Ask one of your gods? 1 Ki 18:27

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "Maybe we can just stick to discussing guns, ammo, and tactics for home defense?"

I'm gonna grab my AR to defend my wife and kids and sparky --right after I pray to my pagan god (1 Ki 18:27).

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "Fancy dancy?"

9 out of 10 shots will miss a moving target for the average person. Firing an AR in your home is foolish. Chances are, you'll hit your kids behind the drywall. A shotgun is the best choice because of the way the shot disperses and annihilates your target. You don't even have to be a good shot to put another person down.

[9 out of 10 shots will miss a moving target] "Cite?"

Mike Debakey, number one shooter competition Colorado 10 years ago (sharp shooting pistols); trained police officers Castle Rock, Colorado; taught: officers pistol shooting, conceal carry classes, etc., retired.

He said, "If I had one gun, I'd have a shotgun."

"I hate to tell you but any round which penetrates adequately enough to be considered a defensive round will, as well, pass through multiple interior house walls."

The disbursement of the shot from a shotgun is different from that of an AR. Anyone who would be behind the wall, behind the target which has been hit has a higher change of survival than anyone behind the wall behind the target of the AR.

"Your argument on this point is invalid."

I don't think you know what you're talking about.

[Shotgun] "[T]he fact is you'd better aim..."

When Mike taught stationary targets, then moving targets, then the shooter moving with moving targets he said people missed 9 out of 10 attempts.  It was pathetic.  And training is in a low stress environment.

"The fact is if you are a bad shot you should be practicing because if you are tossing pellets in the general direction (like from a hip shot) the chances that a few of those pellets are going to get away from you..."

The shot (there are a variety of sizes) is less likely to kill others nearby than an AR. If the person shooting has little or no target practice, a shotgun makes even more sense.

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "I only quoted this part because you are wrong again...."

No I'm not. Your article states:

"In all shotshell loads, number 1 buckshot produces more potentially effective wound trauma than either #00 or #000 buck. In addition, number 1 buck is less likely to over-penetrate and exit an attacker's body.

For home defense applications a standard velocity 2 ¾-inch #1 buck shotshell (16 pellet payload) from Federal, Remington or Winchester is your best choice. We feel the Federal Classic 2 ¾-inch #1 buck load (F127) is slightly better than the same loads offered by Remington and Winchester. The Federal shotshell uses both a plastic shot cup and granulated plastic shot buffer to minimize post-ignition pellet deformation, whereas the Remington and Winchester loads do not."

"My M4 would be a different outcome because I shoot bullets twice as big. And I agree, a 12 gauge shotgun is devastating in close quarters..."

We also own an M4 and an MP5. We choose the shotgun to go sleepy at night.

Response to comment [from other]: "You don't aim a shot gun. It aims itself if you have any hand eye coordination. It is called instinctive shooting. As soon as the stock hits your shoulder the gun should be pointing at what you want to shoot at, what or where you are looking. It all happens in one smooth motion and the trigger is pulled as soon as the stock touches your shoulder. Safety comes off at the same time.

Amazingly effective and accurate once you learn not to aim it."

Next to my woobie, my shotgun helps me sleep well at night. These guys give me no reason to think otherwise.

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "He is comparing different types of shot against each other. Not against an AR round, which I showed you."

It's a fine article.  He makes the case that you'd better know your ammo.  He links you to another site for additional information on shotguns.

"Are you stupid, or just trying to disrupt a discussion?"

I am responding to your response to me.  How is that disruptive.  Are you trying to convince me that a shotgun for home defense is a poor choice?  It is not.

[Are you trying to convince me that a shotgun for home defense is a poor choice? It is not.] "Did I say so?"

"I'm not gonna debate with you, Jerry!" ~ Carl Showalter

"I said train, and aim..."

I do. Thanks.

"Not spray and pray."

Yet, for those who have not trained (like this woman) a shotgun is a good choice.

"This was just so ironic and appropriate I had to keep it for posterity.  ...[B]ut she is correct. If I had said something so ill informed regarding the nature of wounds and their survivability I would comment that I didn't know what I was talking about too.  Thankfully, I didn't say it."

And you have to think about the difference between: hitting the target, then drywall, then a second potential target vs. not hitting the target, then drywall, then a second potential target. We don't fire unless we know what is behind the target.

A shotgun is best for all concerned--bad guy , innocent family members, and plasma screen on opposite wall.

[Next to my woobie, my shotgun helps me sleep well at night. These guys give me no reason to think otherwise. ] "Nobody was trying to..."

I think lightbringer disagrees that a shotgun is the best choice for home defense. But hey, it's a free country. If he is confident with his semi-auto, or AR --so be it. My second choice would be a revolver. You needn't tap, rack, and boom again if you have a bad round because with a revolver you just pull the trigger again. It's a big counry. We a lot of choices. I'm happy when even a pagan defends himself ("lie of the day" Ingraham).

"...[T]his thread has merely been a clearing house for different opinions regarding what has worked best for them.  If you had paid attention to all the posts instead of those few which insulted your tender sensibilities perhaps you would have picked up on that..."

If we need to discuss putting bad guys down, best to do it here. Just insist that said bad guy is arrested (even if his brains are on the wall) and ask for a lawyer. Each bullet has an attorney attached to it.

[Lawyer] "This is absolutely true. Even in a castle doctrine state."

Imagine needing someone like TH.

"There's no lawyer. There's just you and me." ~ Jack Bauer

Response to comment [from an atheist]: "12-guage pump with alternating slug and buckshot loads: slug blows a hole in the door, buckshot takes care of the soft targets beyond."

Be still my heart.

Jerry: "What is that, a 12 gauge?"
Officer: "Yeah."
Jerry: "12 gauge. Seems to be the most popular gauge." ~ Seinfeld

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "In case anyone is interested:  The box o' truth

I like his Box O' Truth.

"It's a really good site. They do some interesting tests. They are not what I would consider "scientific" in their methods but they will give you a pretty good idea of what the real situations look like."

I think I'd like to build one of these Box O'Truths. Nothing like seeing for yourself exactly what would happen in a life-threatening situation. It looks easy enough to build.

Response to comment [from a Christian]: "A coworker of mine just bought a 1911 from Springfield..."

This one is on my wish list, too (Colt 1911 though).
