In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

Today’s big question: is there really a God who created the universe?

As we have seen in this devotional series, there have been many attacks on Scripture throughout history. In Ephesians 6:11, Paul exhorted believers to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” The foundational piece of the armor of God is the truth of Scripture (Ephesians 6:14). If this foundation is destroyed, then we have already lost the battle. This is why it is important to study God’s Word and never compromise on any truth.

Scripture clearly states that God created the universe, yet there are people who claim God does not exist and that the world evolved slowly over millions of years. An atheist is someone who either denies or disbelieves the existence of God. This belief that there is no God is contrary to God’s Word, which clearly states otherwise—starting in Genesis 1:1.

When examining why atheists believe there is no God, we quickly see that it is not due to a lack of evidence. Instead, Scripture helps us understand that it has more to do with a defiant heart set against God. Psalm 14:1–3 states the following:

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, no, not one.

God’s “invisible attributes are clearly seen,” yet ungodly people choose to “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” and have “exchanged the truth of God for lie” (Romans 1:18–25). Atheists would rather believe in any explanation for the existence of the universe and life, as long as the explanation does not include a Creator to whom they will be accountable.

We must recognize that God’s Word really is truth (John 17:17), even—and especially—when it comes to the creation of the universe. As believers, we need to stand firm on Scripture and “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/2010/10/27/god-who-created-the-universe
