University Student Told to Remove or Hide Cross Necklace

Told to Remove or Hide Cross Necklace by Kim
Trobee] "Audrey Jarvis, a Sonoma State
University student, was shocked when a
supervisor told her to remove or hide her
cross necklace during a campus event late
last month.
Jarvis then contacted Liberty Institute
attorneys who filed a religious
accommodation request with the university,
located in Rohnert Park, Calif. The school
is investigating the incident.
“I was offended,” she told Fox News. “As a
Christian woman it is my prerogative to
display my faith any way I like so long as
it is not harming anyone else. I was very
hurt and felt as if the university’s mission
statement — which includes tolerance and
inclusivity to all — was violated.”
University officials publicly apologized
earlier this month.
Hiram Sasser, Liberty Institute director of
litigation, said he was amazed at the level
of religious discrimination.
“It’s unfortunate there are university
officials out there,” he said, “who think
that it’s OK to tell Christians to hide
their faith — but would cringe if somebody
said the same thing about hiding someone’s
pride in whatever political or cultural
affiliation they may have.”
Candi Cushman, Focus on the Family’s
education analyst, praised Jarvis’ actions.
“The good news is she stood up for her
rights,” she said. “She spoke up for her
religious freedoms and free speech rights.
And her actions will set a precedent that
helps protect the religious freedoms of
future students.”
