War on Spanking:  Spock vs. Scripture

"According to the research, children spanked up to the age of 6 were likely as teenagers to perform better at school and were more likely to carry out volunteer work and to want to go to college than their peers who had never been physically disciplined.

But children who continued to be spanked into adolescence showed clear behavioral problems..."  Study:

Response to comment [from a Christian]:  "If your child is that misbehaved as a teenager then you failed in spanking them as a child."

I agree.  There is a great parenting series called Growing Kids God's Way.  They have other good recommendations like don't be a "threatening and repeating" parent-type.

Response to comment [from other]:  "I think spanking is sometimes necessary for small children."

Someone said on Christian radio this week "If you still have to spank your kid in high school, you messed up."  Messing up is ok.  God is a God of second chances, right?  It's never too late to learn.

I enjoyed hearing stories this week.  It seems, as the talk-show hosts shared their stories, ends up they were all pretty mouthy as children.  Their parents set them straight often with a spanking.

"Has there been a lot of debate about it recently? I'm out of the loop, never listen to the radio and I live in England anyway."

A little, since this study (not scientific really).  As Enyart said, you need to love your kids more than you fear the government (Pr 13:24, 19:18, 22:6, 15, 23:13-14, 29:15, 17,  Eph 6:1-4).

FYI, you can hear a lot of great Christian radio via podcast online at OnePlace.com.

Response to comment [from a Catholic]:  "[I]nstead of spanking them why don't you just tell them they are an idiot or a moron?"

...Or we could take your advise and end up with spoiled, stinking brats.

Please say you have sausages for fingers and write from a Blackberry.  My sympathies to your former English teacher.

Response to comment [from a Christian]:  "It's kind of like dog training. When your puppy does something wrong, if you don't correct it within 30 seconds of the act, they won't connect why they are being punished."

Can we rub chrysostom's posts in his/her face?
