“For the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 7:17)

Today’s big question: what is the point of eschatology?

Perhaps that isn’t the correct question. Maybe we should ask, “Who is the point of eschatology?” As we discuss the essential truths of the Consummation, we must keep our compass set on “true north.” Christians have debated over many of the details found in Revelation 7, but there is a great truth in this passage. The primary focus is not on the what, when, or how, but on the who.

Revelation 7:9 shows a great multitude standing before the Lamb and the throne—people from every tribe, tongue, and nation. They have been washed clean by the blood of the Lamb. Jesus is in their midst and it is He who will shepherd and lead them, and wipe every tear from their eyes.

Jesus is the central point of eschatology. Our victory is in Him, and He is the One who metes out rewards and judgment. Jesus wins!

Whether we are sent to hell for all eternity or live gloriously in heaven to worship God forever depends solely on our relationship with Jesus. The churches in Revelation 2–3 are commended or rebuked based upon how they treated Christ. The only One worthy to open the scroll in Revelation is Jesus. Wicked people, along with the devil and his angels, are eternally condemned for their rejection of Jesus. The Father glorifies His eternally begotten Son who is at His right hand. Those in the throne room of heaven bow down in worship before God.

Eschatology teaches us that God is the Victor and this victory is in and through the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ.
