“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8–9)

Today’s big question: who is like God?

Over the past several devotionals, we have considered just a few aspects in which the ways and thoughts of God are infinitely higher than our own. Now we will delve into the fundamental difference between God and everything else. So we ask the question, “Who is like God?”

Actually, this question has already been asked in Scripture, by God Himself: “To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One” (Isaiah 40:25, ESV). The clear answer to this question echoes throughout Scripture: “Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You” (2 Samuel 7:22; cf. Exodus 8:10).

Yes, humans are made in the image or likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), but that does not make us like (i.e., equal to) God. In a sense, fallen man is no more like God than the dust from which He formed us (Genesis 3:19; Psalm 103:14). Like the dust, we are created and upheld by His power:

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. (Colossians 1:16–17)

God is unique from every other being and thing because He alone is infinite and uncreated. We are finite, but the Lord has no beginning or end. Scripture states, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2).

This is why, when Moses inquired about God’s name, the Lord did not compare Himself with any created thing or say, “I am like . . . .” Instead, God proclaimed His name, thus identifying Himself as entirely different and higher than anyone or anything else:

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14)

David understood the greatness of God when he asked, “What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” (Psalm 8:4). When we consider the incomparably awesome Creator God and the fact that He loves you and me, we should fall to our knees in humble worship.http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/2010/11/12/who-is-like-god
