Why do people pray to Jesus?

I was shocked to recently shocked to hear 2 popular TV preachers praying, "Dear Jesus".... Yeshua, himself, taught us how to pray to the Father in Matthew 6 and he tells us his disciples that whatever they ask the Father in His name will be granted (Matthew 18 & 21). Why would anyone think we're supposed to pray to Jesus?

That's right. We are to pray to the Father in the name of the Son.

...If I'm suddenly in a hazardous situation I will call on Jesus...

Like if you're sinking under water (Mt 14:30).
