Famines, Pestilence, Earthquakes and the End Times

"And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven (Lk 21:11)."

What do you think all these earthquakes recently?

"Are we living in the last days? The Bible warns that in the end times we will see the emergence of a new global currency, earthquakes and severe natural disasters, the emergence of a Russian-Iranian alliance, and apocalyptic wars with Israel. Consider, then, a few of today’s noteworthy news stories:

■Head of IMF Proposes New Global Currency
■‘Catastrophe’ in Chile after 8.8-magnitude quake – “Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said a tsunami advisory was in effect for the coast of California and coastal areas of Alaska from Kodiak to Attu.”

Response to comment [from a Jehovah's Witness]:  "Get ready for Judgment day..."

We know that you are not ready for Christ's return.  You are a Jehovah's (false) Witness--still in need of a savior.

Response to comment [from a Catholic]:  "I'm not sure. Either way, it'd probably be a good idea for me to get to a confessional and fast."

I'm not sure either.  I suppose every generation has thought that they were the last.  But, I'm with you--"Let us keep on coming boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may obtain
mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Heb 4:16).  "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Ti 2:5).  We need a savior today.

We should be reminded to be in Christ's righteousness (Isa 64:6]).

Response to comment [from a Jehovah's Witness]:  "Your only hope friend is if you are a elect."

Funny, the cults and 'isms claim they are the only elect.  Anyone can be "elect" when the trust in Christ (2 Pe 3:9).

Response to comment [from a Jehovah's Witness]:  "2 pet 3 9 does not say anyone can be the elect when they trust in Christ...show me a verse that does say any one can be of the elect if they trust in Christ. or did you just make that up ?"

"All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out (Jn 6:37)."

Response to comment [from a Christian]:  "I think nothing of them. Unless you figured out the gentiles are full. There are no signs to watch. That was for Israel's prophecy. We can still see things put in order for when the church departs, but no, the earthquakes mean nothing."

Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is [Mark 13:33].

"The proper attitude of God’s people in all ages as they face the prophetic future is one of watching and praying."

Response to comment [from a Christian]:  "I'm sure we'll see plenty more earthquakes..."

Seems that way.  "One scientist, however, says that relative to the time period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Earth has been more active over the past 15 years or so..."  Full text:   Big quake question: Are they getting worse?  Seismic shockers are to be expected, but planet seems to be more active. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35618526/

Response to comment [from an atheist]:  "Every generation is the last generation..."

Move over Sophocles (Ingraham).

Looks like only young earth creationists got it right in the first place:

"BEL's Earthquake Warning Policy for governments is spot on also. Consider:  Bob Enyart participated in an Age of the Earth Debate six years ago. After the debate, a geophysicist asked, if the earth were young and recently experienced a global flood, that would mean that geologists should give governments greater warnings about earthquake risks. Do you think we should? Bob answered yes, governments should be warned of earthquake risks greater than that predicted by old-earth assumptions.

...[Y]oung-earth creationism is consistent with scientific observations, whereas those observations surprise old-earthers because they would never have predicted such occurrences...Hopefully geologists will see the evidence constantly amassed by young-earth creationists and will allow doubt to be created in their minds."

Yes, I think we mentioned that earlier.

Response to comment [from an atheist]:  "Yes, I'm the one preparing for the end times...Trust me, every generation up til now has believed the end times would have been in their generation..."

What type of "preparing" does an atheist do anyway?  Do you practice tolerating heat? Mt. 25:41.

Response to comment [from a Christian]:  "The begging of sorrows has not happened. It will happen after the church departs."

I don't think we differ in our eschatology.  My point is, that those things which must come to pass appear to be passing (Mt 24:6).  If you were headed to a city called New Jerusalem and saw a sign "New Jerusalem 10 miles," you'd take note.

J. Vernon McGee said, " False christs, rumors of wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes characterize the entire church age, but they will apparently be intensified as we draw near to the end of the age."  McGee, J. V. (1997, c1981). Thru the Bible commentary.

We see characteristics not signs of the end of the age.  "But the end is not yet" (v. 6)."

Response to comment [from an atheist]:  "There is supposed to be a meteor passing near Earth in about 15 years, I think......And I don't prepare..."

Are you preparing for a meteor?

Response to comment [from an agnostic]:  [Earthquakes more frequent] "...[K]eep in mind, taking geological advice from Bob Enyart is akin to taking Biblical advice from me."

Who was right (and keep in mind—earthquakes aren’t his specialty).
