Catholic & Protestant Approaches to the Bible

Tell the prophet Isaiah that (Is. 55:11). Ps 119:130.

The Protestant Reformation was necessary.

Too bad you're a legalist. "Too bad." ~ Seth Brundle, The Fly

“One of the most helpful and profound statements I have read in recent years for the understanding of contemporary church life is by Leith Anderson. He notes,

While the New Testament speaks often about churches, it is surprisingly silent about many matters that we associate with church structure and life. There is no mention of architecture, pulpits, lengths of typical sermons (or sermons!], rules for having a Sunday school. Little is said about style of music, order of worship, or times of church gatherings. There were no Bibles, denominations, camps, pastor’s conferences, or board meeting minutes. Those who strive to be New Testament churches must seek to live its principles and absolutes, not reproduce the details.

Those details simply aren’t given.

Now you might ask yourself, Why does the New Testament say nothing about all those matter to which the usual congregation today devotes almost all its thought and effort? Answer: Because those matters are not primary and will take care of themselves with little attention whenever what is primary is appropriately cared for. Pay attention to the “principles and absolutes” of the New Testament church and, one might suppose, everything else will fall into place—in large part because “everything else” really doesn’t matter much one way or the other. To fail to put the focus on those principles and absolutes, on the other hand, is to wander off into a state of distraction, which is where most of our local congregations actually are. They wind up majoring on minors and allowing the majors, from the New Testament point of view, to disappear (Willard, pg. 235-236).”

Grow up then reapply. I believe they have mental stability requirements.

Response to comment [from a Catholic]: [Do you have faith in the wisdom of men or in the power of God? 1 Cor 2:4-5.] "Do you have faith in the wisdom of men...or in the wisdom of God..."

I have faith in God's wisdom (1 Sa 2:3; Job 9:4). It is perfect (Job 36:4; 37:16). Your Pope is not perfect. Yours is mindless wisdom (e.g. making decisions without rational, logical reasoning). What makes you a superstitious mystic is that you believe things apart from evidence (Ferguson).

We call you Cruci-form-of-godliness-but-denying-the-power-thereof (
2 Ti 3:5) because you trust in men's wisdom. A Christian would have said he trusts in the power of God (1 Cor 2:4-5). Men lie (Ga 1:6-8, Mt 15:9, Eph 4:14). God does not (Nu 23:19).

"Are you in love with your preferred non-Catholic doctrinal tradition..."

I love the truth (Jn 1:1). Why don't you? Jn 3:19. Why do you tolerate these false teachings from your church?

"...[S]erpent's interpretations of the bible are lies."

You'd better check for yourself against God's word (Ac 17:11). Where I depart from the word of God, reject what I say (1 Cor 2:1).

"The Pope, however, does teach infallibly with respect to formal Christian doctrine."

They teach error well (Ga 5:9).

False Catholic Traditions
Knowledge is not enough. Even the demons have that and so does the Pope (Jas 2:19). You need knowledge, insight, and finally intimacy. You cannot be saved until you understand the gospel of grace (Ezr 7:25, Gen. 15:6; Gen. 20:6; Deut. 7:6–9; Deut. 9:4–6; Job 10:12; Job 22:2, 3; Psa. 94:17–19; Psa. 138:3; Psa. 143:11; Dan. 9:18; Dan. 10:18, 19; John 6:44, 45; John 17:11, 12, 15; Acts 4:29, 30; Acts 26:22; Rom. 3:22–24; Rom. 4:4, 16; Rom. 5:2, 6–8, 15–21; Rom. 9:10–16; Rom. 11:5, 6; 1 Cor. 1:4–8; 1 Cor. 10:13; 1 Cor. 15:10; 2 Cor. 1:12; Gal. 1:14, 16; Eph. 1:5–9, 11, 12; Eph. 2:8, 9; Eph. 3:16; Eph. 4:7; Eph. 6:10; Phil. 1:19; Phil. 2:13; 1 Thess. 1:1 1 Thess. 5:28; 2 Pet. 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:14; 2 Tim. 1:1, 9; Tit. 3:7; 1 Pet. 1:5; 1 Pet. 4:10; 1 Pet. 5:10; Jude 1, 21, 24, 25; Rev. 3:10).

"...[S]erpent is a man; therefore, serpent is lying. For that matter, the apostles were men; therefore, the apostles were lying."

Christ taught out of the scriptures, he must have been lying, too (Lk 24:27).

For the Catholic, man's word is the final authority. For the Christian, God's word is the final authority.

"We have different authorities, we believe different gospels, we worship different Christs, we are led by different spirits and we are on different paths to eternity. Compare this with the unity the apostle Paul described with those who are in one body and one ......Spirit, with one hope; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, on God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all (
Eph 4:4-6)..." Full text: No Idolatry & False Teaching

[Check God's word for yourself] "I do---just not against serpent's favored interpretations of God's word. Big difference there."

Love God with all your mind (Ps 104:34).  The scriptures are full and sufficient (Lk 16:29,31), an unerring guide (Pr 6:23; 2 Pe 1:19), able to make men wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Ti 3:15).

[Where I depart from the word of God, reject what I say.] "I do, which is why I'm a Catholic."

Plenty of Catholics will go to hell (plenty of Protestants will too by the way). We don't go to heaven or hell based on church affiliation. We go to heaven or hell based on a right relationship with Jesus Christ (Isa 45:25; 53:11). Get to know him in his word (Phil 3:8). You cannot love God without your mind (Eph 1:17).

"To answer this question, we must first differentiate between denominations within the body of Christ and non-Christian cults and false religions..." Full text: Why are there so many Christian denominations?

There are two types of people--the righteous and the wicked. We have no righteousness of our own (
Job 15:14; Ps 14:3; Ro 3:10). No one will be justified by their "good" works (Ro 3:20; 9:31,32; Ga 2:16). No one will be saved by their "good" works (Eph 2:8,9; 2 Ti 1:9; Tit 3:5). Unregenerate men are stuck on stupid (Lu 18:9; Ro 10:3). We must be found in Christ (Isa 45:24; 54:17; 2 Co 5:21). Saints have his righteousness imputed (Ro 4:11,22).

No Mediator

"And Christ promised that the Holy Spirit would lead his Church into all truth (Jn. 16:13)..."

You are not a member of the body of Christ. You reject the gospel of grace. "Grace and peace", "grace and peace"--it is in that order in scripture. First grace, then peace (Isa 48:22).

Salvation is by Christ (
Isa 63:9; Eph 5:23) and Christ alone (Isa 45:21,22; 59:16; Ac 4:12). It is of his grace (Eph 2:5,8; 2 Ti 1:9; Tit 2:11) through faith in him (Mr 16:16; Ac 16:31; Ro 10:9; Eph 2:8; 1Pe 1:5). You point to men, to your church, and to yourself (
Pr 21:4, Mt 6:5). The Christian points to Christ.

All say no play (
Jude 1:12).

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you [
John 16:12–14].

"We don’t know it all. We are to keep growing in grace and in the knowledge of Him. How can we do it? Just reading the Bible is not the complete answer; the Holy Spirit must be our Teacher as we read.

The Spirit of God is the Spirit of Truth. He will lead and guide you into all truth. He guided the apostles just as the Lord said He would, and we find these truths in the Epistles. The Spirit of God came to these men at Pentecost, and He guided them in the truth both in their preaching and in their writing.

We can see how this was fulfilled in the apostles. The ministry of the Holy Spirit has been to complete the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Epistles glorify Christ and show Him as the Head of the church. They speak of His coming again to establish His kingdom. The Epistles are the unfolding of the person and ministry of Christ. They also tell of things to come and certainly the Book of Revelation does this.

Notice the seven steps that are here: (1) The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, has come; (2) He will guide you into all truth; (3) He will not speak of Himself; (4) He shall speak whatsoever He shall hear; (5) He will show you things to come; (6) He shall glorify Jesus; and (7) He shall receive of mine and show it unto you.

Since we have been told these steps, we have a way of testing what we hear and read. I listened to a man on a radio program saying, “We are having a Holy Ghost revival; the Holy Ghost is working; the Holy Ghost is doing this and that.” The minute he said all those things, I knew the Holy Ghost was not working. Why? Because the Lord Jesus made it very clear that the Holy Ghost will not speak of Himself. Then how can you tell when the Holy Spirit is working? He will glorify Christ. My friend, when in a meeting or a Bible study you suddenly get a glimpse of the Lord Jesus and He becomes wonderful, very real, and meaningful to you, that is the working of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “He shall glorify me.”"

[Strawman] "I was merely commenting on it."

You were using a fallacious argument--again.

"There is no middle man. Obey God not man."

You removed the scripture (Jn 1:1) from my quote [There is no middle man. Obey God not man (Ac 5:29).] It is what you do (Eph 4:14). :Shimei:

"Why, then, do you derive your ideas and beliefs from human sources (i.e, men)?"

You believe Popes. We believe God's word (Jn 1:1). God's word (not the Pope's word [Mt 15:9]) is the final word (Ps. 119:142, 151, 160 ).

"You point to men, to your church, and to yourself. The Christian points to Christ."

You removed the scripture from my quote (Jn 1:1) [You point to men, to your church, and to yourself (Pr 21:4, Mt 6:5). The Christian points to Christ.] It is what you do (Eph 4:14).

"McGee is completely wrong on this point."

If that were true you would be able to prove it from the word of God (Ac 17:11).

"The mere fact that serpent happens to disagree is entirely irrelevant."

The Roman Catholic Church does not have special knowledge that others cannot know. Gnostics taught this. The scriptures are full and sufficient (Lk 16:29,31), an unerring guide (Pr 6:23; 2 Pe 1:19), able to make men wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Ti 3:15).

It was never designated as a "re-sacrifice of Jesus."

"One of the most unbelievable, yet fiercely held, traditions of the Roman Catholic Church is its dogma of transubstantiation. First pronounced at the Fourth Lateran Council in l2l5 AD, it declares the entire substance of bread and wine is transformed into the actual body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ Each Catholic priest is said to have the Spirit's power to call Jesus down from heaven through this miracle of transubstantiation. Thus Jesus becomes physically present on Catholic altars so that priests can offer Him again to the Father for the sins of the living and the dead. After the offering, God is eaten by Catholics when they ingest the Eucharist. Without question, the Roman Catholic Church regards Christ's real presence in the Eucharist a dogma of utmost importance. According to paragraph1324 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), the Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life." It teaches us: "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained" in the Eucharist (CCC, 1374). This is a non-negotiable dogma because the Council of Trent placed a curse or anathema on anyone who does not believe it (Canon 1). Furthermore, Catholics must consume the Eucharist because it is a necessary requirement for their salvation (CCC, 1359). If Catholic priests can indeed change bread and wine into the body and blood of the infinite Christ, and if indeed consuming His body and blood is necessary for salvation, then the whole world must become Roman Catholic to be saved from the wrath of God..." [[Rescuing Precious Souls from the Bondage of Religion Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries] "We can be wrong about a lot of things in this life and still survive, but if we are wrong about the only way to obtain forgiveness from God, we will pay for that fatal mistake throughout all eternity. Our Creator provides only one way to redeem man from sin and He has revealed it in a divinely inspired message to mankind. However, it didn't take long for God's complete and perfect Gospel message to be corrupted by religious leaders. These men, who say they speak for God, have distorted and perverted this good news of God's mercy and grace. Their unstated goal has been to control people by keeping them in legalistic bondage to their authority. The Lord Jesus revealed the only way of escape from this bondage. He said: "If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (
John 8:31-32)." Full text: Rescuing Precious Souls from the Bondage of Religion

"James 2:21,22,23,24...[W]hat is the Protestant approach to the Bible?"

We believe the Bible (Jas 1:18).

"2:21 justified by works. This does not contradict Paul’s clear teaching that Abraham was justified before God by grace alone through faith alone (Rom. 3:20; 4:1–25; Gal. 3:6,11). For several reasons, James cannot mean that Abraham was constituted righteous before God because of his own good works: 1) James already stressed that salvation is a gracious gift (1:17,18); 2) in the middle of this disputed passage (v. 23), James quoted Gen. 15:6, which forcefully claims that God credited righteousness to Abraham solely on the basis of his faith (see notes on Rom. 1:17; 3:24; 4:1–25); and 3) the work that James said justified Abraham was his offering up of Isaac (Gen. 22:9,12), an event that occurred many years after he first exercised faith and was declared righteous before God (Gen. 12:1–7; 15:6). Instead, Abraham’s offering of Isaac demonstrated the genuineness of his faith and the reality of his justification before God. James is emphasizing the vindication before others of a man’s claim to salvation. James’ teaching perfectly complements Paul’s writings; salvation is determined by faith alone (Eph. 2:8,9) and demonstrated by faithfulness to obey God’s will alone (Eph. 2:10).

2:22 was made perfect. This refers to bringing something to its end, or to its fullness. Just as a fruit tree has not arrived at its goal until it bears fruit, faith has not reached its end until it demonstrates itself in a righteous life.

2:23 the Scripture … says. Quoted from
Gen. 15:6; see notes on Rom. 4:1–5. friend of God. Abraham is so called in 2 Chr. 20:7 and Is. 41:8 because of his obedience (John 15:14,15).

[Establish the Supreme Authority for Truth Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries] "Reaching those who are being held captive by religious indoctrination must always begin by establishing the Bible as the supreme authority for knowing God's Gospel. Christ and His Word must rule over man's religious traditions because God has exalted His Word above all things (
Psalm 138:2). The word of God is infallible and has no equal (Isa. 55:10). The Bible is the most authoritative, influential and powerful book ever written. It is the standard for discerning truth from error (1 John 4:6). It is sufficient to function as the sole, infallible rule of faith (2 Tim. 3:14-16). The Bible does not refer us to any other rule of faith because everything we must know, understand and believe to be reconciled to God is found in Scripture (1 Cor. 15:1-4). Whenever we are confronted by two or more opinions, we must always ask, "But what does the Scripture say?" (Gal. 4:30)." Full text: Establish the Supreme Authority for Truth

"...[Y]ou keeping adding "faith alone" to Scripture..."

We are saved by grace alone (Eph 2:8-9), through faith alone (Eph 1:13; 2Ti 1:10), in Christ alone (Isa 45:21,22; 59:16; Ac 4:12).  Roman Catholics deny this (Jude 1:11).

[Eph 2:8-10]

"2:8 faith, and that not of yourselves. “That” refers to the entire previous statement of salvation, not only the grace but the faith. Although men are required to believe for salvation, even that faith is part of the gift of God which saves and cannot be exercised by one’s own power. God’s grace is preeminent in every aspect of salvation (cf. Rom. 3:20; Gal. 2:16).

2:10 created in … for good works. Good works cannot produce salvation but are subsequent and resultant God-empowered fruits and evidences of it (cf.
John 15:8; Phil. 2:12, 13; 2 Tim. 3:17; Titus 2:14; James 2:16–26). which God prepared beforehand. [What About The Traditions of Men? Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries]: "Roman Catholics reject the supreme authority of Scripture by elevating their tradition to the same level of authority. They defend their position by quoting St. Paul who wrote: "Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us" (2 Thes. 2:15). But we must make a distinction between traditions which had already been taught by the apostles in the first century and the traditions established by men over the last 1900 years (2 Cor. 11:2 ; 2 Thes. 3:6).

Clearly there are certain apostolic traditions recorded in Scripture that Christians must embrace, but not all traditions are biblical. Paul encouraged us to make this distinction. He wrote: "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" (
Col. 2:8). Paul is warning us that we can become ensnared by the traditions of men when they do not conform to Christ and His word. Tradition must always be subservient to Scripture because God's word is divinely inspired while tradition is not." Full text: What About The Traditions of Men?

[What About "Infallible" Men? Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries]: "Roman Catholics also reject the supreme authority of Scripture by elevating its "infallible" bishops to be equal in authority. In practice, the bishops actually sit above Scripture by declaring no one else can give an authentic interpretation of the Word of God (Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 85). Yet the Apostle Paul commended the Bereans (who were not bishops) for interpreting the Scriptures to verify the truthfulness of his teaching. "Now the Bereans...received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true" (Acts 17:11). It is quite clear that the apostle, who penned over half the New Testament, encouraged his listeners to submit to the supreme authority of the Hebrew Scriptures. The veracity of every man's message must be tested with the same Scriptural authority." Full text:

There are not two gospels. There is one gospel (Ac 20:24).

[Getting the Gospel Right Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries]: "Once the supreme authority of Scripture has been communicated to Catholics who are enslaved to another authority, the Gospel of God can be heralded. It is wise to present God's Gospel in contrast to Rome's plan of salvation so Catholics can discern the difference. The distinction between the two gospels can best be described as the difference between divine accomplishment and human achievement. The true Gospel describes what God has done through Jesus Christ to save sinners, while the gospel of Rome describes what man must do for God. Paul defines the Gospel according to Scripture alone (
1 Cor. 15:1-4). The glorious Gospel of grace is what one perfect man did 2000 years ago to reconcile sinful man to God. It has nothing to do with what any imperfect man has done since, or is doing now. This eliminates all the requirements Roman Catholics have added to the finished work of Jesus Christ. It also eliminates Catholic priests making daily sin offerings on their altars." Full text: Getting the Gospel Right

Response to comment [from a Catholic]: "How is it that you presume to have any real knowledge or understanding of "what the Church preaches...""

People can understand your theology and reject it as unbiblical.

[Catholics Are Totally Dependent Upon An Illegitimate Priesthood Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries]: "One of the most controlling elements of the Roman Catholic religion is its indoctrination concerning the priesthood. Each Catholic is taught that their salvation is utterly dependent upon the ministry of their priests. According to the unbiblical teachings of Rome, it is the Catholic priest who baptizes infants for their justification and spiritual birth, the priest who hears confession and demands penance as the satisfaction for sin, the priest who dispenses Jesus in the Eucharist, the priest who imparts the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confirmation, the priest who gives Last Rites, and the priest who offers the sacrifice of the Mass for souls suffering in purgatory. What a fatal deception!

There is no longer a need for priests offering sacrifices for sin because by one offering Jesus Christ has perfected for all time those who are sanctified (
Heb. 10:14). At the very moment our Lord Jesus gave up His Spirit on Calvary's cross, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Mat. 27:51). The veil that separated sinful man from the Holy of Holies was ripped open, and now, anyone washed by the blood of Christ can come boldly into the presence of God. When Jesus, our High Priest, offered Himself once for all sin for all time, he made the sacrificial priesthood obsolete. Every believer in Jesus Christ has been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all (Heb. 10:10).

The illegitimacy and obsolescence of the Roman Catholic priesthood is also expressly noted by the sovereign and exclusive work of the triune God in saving sinners. It is God the Father who chooses, calls and draws the lost to His Son (
John 6:44; Jas. 2:5). The Holy Spirit convicts them of their sin and the coming judgment (John 16:8-11). Jesus Christ is proclaimed through His Word as the only way of salvation (John 14:6). God gives life to those dead in sin and grants the sinner repentance and faith (Rom. 4:17; Eph. 2:8-9; 2 Tim. 2:25). Jesus exchanges His righteousness for the sins of the believer (2 Cor. 5:21). The Holy Spirit seals, indwells and empowers the justified believer (Eph. 1:13-14, Rom. 8). The Father adopts, secures and glorifies His children (John 1:12; Rom. 8:30). Clearly, God alone is deserving of all glory! (Rom. 11:36). He alone is worthy to be praised!" Full text: Catholics Are Totally Dependent Upon An Illegitimate Priesthood

"...[Y]our comment is entirely irrelevant..."

God's word is relevant (Jer. 23:28).

[How Can We Rescue These Precious Souls? Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries]: "Paul provides the answer! "The Lord's bondservant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will" (
2 Tim. 2:24-26). We must take note of the correct way to approach those who are being deceived by the clever, scheming, and subtle lies of the devil. We must lovingly confront them with gentleness, patience and humility and avoid being quarrelsome or argumentative. As we correct them, we must use the Scriptures and avoid giving our own opinions, experiences or philosophy. Saving faith comes from hearing the Word (Rom. 10:17).

Liberty from the bondage of sin and deception is found only in Christ. The Father sent Him to preach the Gospel to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and to set free those who are downtrodden (
Luke 4:18). Jesus also came to give sight to the blind because a veil of spiritual blindness covers every man's heart. However there is one condition that must be met: Paul declares: "whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away" (2 Cor. 3:16). This means turning from fallible men and their traditions and turning to Christ and His infallible word!" Full text: How Can We Rescue These Precious Souls?

Who will render to every man according to his deeds [Rom. 2:6].

"He shall reward every man according to his works. Absolute justice is the criterion of the judgment or rewards. Man’s deeds stand before God in His holy light. No man in his right mind wants to be judged on this basis. Remember Cornelius—he was a good man, but he was lost." McGee, J. Vernon: Thru the Bible Commentary. electronic ed. Nashville : Thomas Nelson, 1997, c1981, S. 4:657-658

"2:6–10 See notes on 2:1–16. Although Scripture everywhere teaches that salvation is not on the basis of works (see notes on 4:1–4; Eph. 2:8, 9), it consistently teaches that God’s judgment is always on the basis of a man’s deeds (Is. 3:10, 11; Jer. 17:10; John 5:28, 29; 1 Cor. 3:8; 2 Cor. 5:10; Gal. 6:7–9; cf. Rom. 14:12). Paul describes the deeds of two distinct groups: the redeemed (vv. 7, 10) and the unredeemed (vv. 8, 9). The deeds of the redeemed are not the basis of their salvation but the evidence of it. They are not perfect and are prone to sin, but there is undeniable evidence of righteousness in their lives (see notes on James 2:14–20, 26)."
